Permanent place of nymphs

The Zwinger is one of the most imposing buildings of the Baroque. Two round (Wall and Glockenspiel Pavilion) and four rectangular pavilions surround the square in a symmetric system, with lawns and fountains decorated courtyard.

The pavilions are by bow galleries and standing on the old fortress walls Long Gallery - interrupted by the Crown Gate - together. The conclusion to the north is the Semper. Once the space between the inner and outer ramparts of the city, which served to funnel the enemy, had long lost the kennel before August the Strong, the function of a defense system.
1709 was chief master builder Pöppelmann the contract to build an orangery in the garden kennels for the accommodation of orange trees and other potted plants in winter. Later came the idea to use the facility in addition to the festivities of the court. The festival culture of the Baroque not only served as entertainment and amusement of the court, but also as an opportunity, represent wealth and sovereign power. The final completion of the building took place, however until 1728, so the rooms could be used to host the grand collections.
By the Anglo-American bombing in February 1945, the Zwinger was almost completely destroyed. By 1945 it was rebuilt, so that parts could be re-opened in 1960.
In the Zwinger, including museums of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, including porcelain collection, Old Masters Picture Gallery and "Rüstkammer".
