Castle & Park Pillnitz

The attraction of Pillnitz lies in its Chinese architectural style.

East of Dresden, on the right bank of the Elbe River lies the idyllic village of Pillnitz. Easily reachable from Dresden by bus or car visitors can take a boat trip using the Elbe Steamer.

Elector “August the Strong”, built the castle built for his favourite Mistress
Anna Constantia von Cosel.

The Castle was designed by the Baroque architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and is located directly on the banks of the Elbe. Castle and landscaped park are a textbook example of the chinoiserie style, which merges the architecture of the Far East with the Baroque period. The best way to approach the palace with its main pagoda roofs is to use the Elbe steamer.

The gardens of Pillnitz deserve special attention. Partly designed as a classical English landscape garden, elsewhere they show the artistically rigorous form of the Baroque period. The English, the Dutch and the Chinese Garden of the extensive grounds immediately invite the visitor for a stroll. The Orangery and the glory, risen in a new palm house attract botanically interested. Visitors can examine the exotic treasures such as the famous 250-year-old Japanese camellia. This maybe the reason that this ornamental tree inhabits a house in the Pillnitz grounds.
