Semper Opera House Dresden

Opera House with tradition in the heart of Dresden

In the years 1838 - 1841 Gottfried Semper built the first Royal Court Theatre. The building in the style of the early Italian Renaissance was one of the most beautiful theaters in Europe. September in 1869 the building burnt completely.

1871 began with the construction of the second house. John Schilling created the magnificent quadriga above the main entrance with Dionysos, the Greek god of joy, and his bride Ariadne, which is drawn by panthers. The sculptures of six great poets adorn the facade: Schiller, Goethe, Shakespeare, Sophocles, Euripides and Molière. Will open the Semper Opera in 1878.

1944, during the Second World War, the game ceased operations on 13 February 1945, the Semper Opera House burnt down during the bombing of Dresden for the second time.

After deciding on a new building in the historical model, however, changes in the interior changes has to be made for room for modern stage technology. 1977 started with the second reconstruction.
On 13 February 1985, 40 years after its destruction, the Semper Opera House was reopend again.
